Monika Balu (b. 1994) is a Lithuanian artist currently based in Friesland, the Netherlands. She has been experimenting with photography since the age of fourteen. Monika has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Minerva Art Academy (Hanze University of Applied Sciences) in Groningen, The Netherlands in 2017. She has additionally sought inspiration from the Japanese way of living during the exchange semester of Contemporary Art course at the Nagoya Zokei University in Komaki city, Japan. For her graduation work, Monika investigated trash disposal and eating habits. Last June, she obtained a Master of Fine Arts (Photography) degree at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she focused on hearing perception and the relationship between photography and sound. Her work has been exhibited in Lithuania, The Netherlands, Japan, Germany, UK, Portugal, Sweden, Luxembourg, the United States and Belgium. Monika Balu is intrigued by intersensory experiences and how the perception of human senses can be stretched. She is currently participating at Fotodok Lighthouse talent development program in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Her ideas about communication during a pandemic have been awarded with “Stipendium Dialoog 2020” grant, which will allow her to realise the project in the upcoming year.

Monika Balu (Balukevičiūtė) (g. 1994) – menininkė, šiuo metu gyvenanti ir dirbanti Fryzijoje, Nyderlanduose. Aktyviai eksperimentuoti su fotografija pradėjo būdama 14-os. 2017 m. baigė vaizduojamosios dailės bakalauro studijas Hanze taikomųjų mokslų universiteto Minervos akademijoje, Groningeno mieste Nyderlanduose. Papildomai Monika sėmėsi japoniško gyvenimo išminties ir studijavo šiuolaikinį meną pagal mainų programą Nagoya Zokei universitete, Komaki mieste Japonijoje. Baigiamajam bakalauro darbui gilinosi į žmonių valgymo įpročius viešose maitinimo įstaigose bei atliekų šalinimo praktikas. Praėjusį birželį, Monika įgijo fotografijos magistro laipsnį Geteborgo universiteto HDK-Valand akademijoje, Geteborgo mieste Švedijoje. Šių studijų metu ji pradėjo dirbti ties klausos suvokimu bei fotografijos ir garso santykiu. Monikos darbai buvo eksponuojami parodose Nyderlanduose, Japonijoje, Vokietijoje, Jungtinėje Karalystėje, Portugalijoje, Švedijoje, Liuksemburge, Belgijoje bei JAV. Monika ypač domisi žmogaus jutiminių sistemų sąveika ir jų sampratos plėtimu. Šiuo metu ji dalyvauja dokumentinės fotografijos organizacijos „Fotodok“ parengtoje „Lighthouse“ talentų programoje Utrechto mieste Nyderlanduose. Taip pat, menininkės idėjos apie komunikaciją pandemijos metu neseniai buvo įvertintos „Stipendium Dialoog 2020“ piniginiu prizu, padėsiančiu jas įgyvendinti.
